The Prince and Princess of Wales have a “totally united front” against the way they were treated by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex following their interview with US TV presenter Oprah Winfrey in April 2021, according to a leading royal expert.

The deeply personal interview with the US television host saw the couple make several claims about the Royal Family – from Meghan claiming that Kate made her cry days before her wedding to alleged conversations about how dark baby Archie’s skin might be before he was born.

Shortly after the interview aired and hit headlines around the world, and despite the Firm’s motto of ‘Never complain, Never explain’, the contents was too explosive to ignore. Buckingham Palace released a statement saying the family was “saddened” to hear of Meghan and Harry’s challenges, but she also remarked that “recollections may vary” when it comes to the issues and concerns raised in their interview.

With the phrase becoming instantly memorable and oft quoted, it later came as a surprise to learn who the driving force behind tough three-word statement reportedly was.

In the updated edition of Valentine Low’s book, Courtiers: The Hidden Power Behind the Crown, it was claimed that the Princess of Wales “played a key role” in the memorable line, with a leading commentator praising Kate and William for handling the situation strongly.

Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams told Express.co.uk: “Whether or not she was responsible for the unerring riposte to Harry and Meghan’s subversive appearance on Oprah, ‘some recollections may vary’, as has been reported, there is little doubt that she and William have a totally united front against the way both he personally and the Royal Family in particular, were betrayed by the Sussexes.

“She and William complement each other so wonderfully well. This is clear from their body language, their delight in sporting rivalries in public which gives them an opportunity to show off their sense of fun, and the way they so clearly relate to the charities they have chosen. Their patronage gives them a unique cachet.”

As announced back in January 2020, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped back as working members of The Royal Family. The couple married in St George’s Chapel, Windsor on May 19, 2018, and have two children – Prince Archie, five, and Princess Lilibet, three.

Since moving away and building their lives outside of the Firm, Harry and Meghan released a self-titled documentary on Netflix, where they also depicted their life within the Firm and Meghan explained her viewpoint as a new member of the family.

Prince Harry also released a bombshell memoir, titled Spare in January 2023, most notably highlighting his relationship with his brother, Prince William, and opinions on his stepmother, Queen Camilla, following the death of his late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales.
