Opinion: Why Trolling Tom Sandoval Is Wrong, Despite His Mistakes
When Scandoval went down on Season 10 of Vanderpump Rules, it was a lot of drama for fans to digest. The idea that the number one guy in the group, Tom Sandoval, was capable of such a dirty deed really took most of us aback. The bartender spent the next two years clawing his way out of the cocoon of shame. And it wasn’t easy. Tom was the most hated guy in the Bravoverse. But time has passed, and wounds have semi-healed. So when a troll recently told Tom he should off himself it didn’t sit right with me.
Tom Sandoval was told to kill himself by a troll on social media
We’ve all dealt with an online troll once or twice in our lifetimes. Some of us might have even been a troll. Thanks to the age of the internet, it now comes with the territory. For readers who aren’t aware, a troll is a person who “intentionally antagonizes others online by posting inflammatory, irrelevant, or offensive comments or other disruptive content,” according to Merriam-Webster. Trolls are really just bullies who feel empowered to say what they want because they aren’t face-to-face. Recently, Tom had his own run-in with an online troll, and it was anything but nice.
The Vanderpump Rules alum was excited to announce the return of his podcast, Everybody Loves Tom. But it turns out some of his followers could really care less. Tom’s podcast is mostly about his experiences, much like every other Bravoleb podcast. One meanie decided that instead of just unfriending Tom, they would tell him, “Ummmm, more like ‘everyone only likes one Tom, and the other one should do the world a favor and kill himself.” Tom posted this sentiment to his Instagram Story, adding, “Nothing like positivity on a Monday! Also yes it sometimes does hurt to hear things like this.”
Scandoval is old news, and Tom Sandoval gained fans on The Traitors
Let’s be honest; Scandoval is old news. The information came out in stages: Someone cheated. So we assumed Tom Schwartz cheated on Katie Maloney again. Then, fans learned Tom cheated on Ariana Madix. Yeah, it wasn’t a great look for the guy, but life happens. I’d argue that most of us have been cheated on or know someone who has. It sucks but you eventually move on. I still don’t agree with what Tom did, but if I’m being honest, he still made for good TV even during Season 11. And if I’m being really honest, Tom most assuredly gained new fans during his time on The Traitors.
In fact, Tom on the hit Peacock show was TV gold. I loved it when Tom tried to voice his opinion at the roundtable, but then the consensus was for him to hush up so the real gamers could talk. And while Tom clearly knew a thing or two about being unfaithful, he worked his hardest to prove to everyone that he could be an asset. But, perhaps the best moment, living forever rent-free in my mind, was his attempts at mimicking the singing of some creepy dolls.
Tom Sandoval has support in girlfriend Victoria Lee Robinson
Even though Tom and Victoria Lee Robinson have had a few ups and downs, they seem legit. They recently even celebrated their one-year anniversary. After Tom was delivered the hateful message, Victoria wasted no time jumping into action to protect her man. She encouraged all her followers to report the user for their mean-spirited post. She wrote, “She deleted her disgusting comments; everyone, please go report [her] Instagram. I don’t tolerate suicide threats. (She changed her Instagram name; that’s why it’s tagged differently).”
Reality TV is supposed to be fun, light-hearted, and a distraction from everyday life. There is no room for this type of hate, even if you really dislike a certain cast member. Frankly, if you’re that annoyed, just don’t watch the show. Thankfully, it looks like Tom is not letting the opinions of haters stop him from moving on with his life because Scandoval doesn’t define him anymore.
The Vanderpump Rules is available to stream on Peacock.
