OMG! Princess Anne’s Historic Gesture to Princess Charlotte As New Queen Shook The Palace
The royal family has existed for hundreds of years, but in the modern age, they have made more of an effort to integrate into normal society. The royals today live differently than they did decades ago, with Prince William and Princess Catherine, the future King and Queen, striving to give the next generation of royals the most normal lives possible.
One person who understands the difficulties that come with a royal title is Princess Anne. Reports of King Charles III’s serious health issues have cast a profound shadow over the British monarchy, sparking uncertainty and sadness among the public. The beloved King has reportedly been battling cancer, and recent developments suggest he may have ceased regular cancer treatments, instead focusing on arrangements for the monarchy’s future.
This health crisis has prompted difficult discussions within the monarchy, which is already undergoing a pivotal transformation. Among the significant steps being taken is the passing down of a cherished title by Princess Anne. Known for her unparalleled dedication to royal duties, Princess Anne is expected to transfer this title to Princess Charlotte, the young daughter of Prince William and Princess Catherine.
Interestingly, Charlotte has a better chance of becoming queen than Princess Anne due to a lesser-known royal rule established during Queen Elizabeth II’s reign. Princess Anne once defended the decision of some royals in the extended family to forgo royal titles for their children, saying:
“I think it was probably easier for them, and I think most people would argue that there are downsides to having titles. So I think that was probably the right thing to do.”
In this new royal age, the rules are starting to bend, allowing members of the family to lean further into their personal preferences. In 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made waves by announcing their departure from royal duties to pursue a private life in the United States. Similarly, in 2022, Prince William and Princess Catherine moved out of Kensington Palace to settle in Windsor, providing their children with a more private upbringing.
Princess Anne’s grandchildren—Mia, Lena, and Lucas Tindall—also do not have royal titles. They are close in age to the Wales children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—who hold formal titles as Prince and Princess. Despite the difference in status, the children bond over shared interests such as soccer and the outdoors, and they have become closer as they grow older.
For much of royal history, a rule prioritized male heirs in the line of succession over their female counterparts. This meant the country was more likely to see a king than a queen. However, during the latter part of her reign, Queen Elizabeth II introduced new legislation ensuring that gender would no longer determine succession.
This change meant that during Princess Catherine’s first pregnancy, her child—whether a boy or a girl—would remain the heir to the throne. Although Prince George is first in line and will one day become King, Princess Charlotte’s place in the line of succession has remained unchanged following the birth of Prince Louis in 2018.
Charlotte, now nine years old, will only move down the line of succession if her older brother has children of his own. While her chances of becoming Queen are greater than Princess Anne’s, it would only happen if George abdicates or passes away at a young age before having children.
The British monarchy’s evolution reflects a balance of tradition and modernity, demonstrating that even the most established institutions can adapt to changing times.
