This move marked a significant departure from their previous residence at Kensington Palace, which had once been partially opened to the public. However, their current family home in Windsor has remained a private retreat.
Unlike the public access allowed at Kensington Palace, Adelaide Cottage is a much more private space. It’s not just a new chapter in their living arrangements but a complete shift in their lifestyle. The couple has made it clear they are done with living in the heart of London, and even when they eventually ascend the throne, there’s little chance they’ll return to the city.
In fact, William and Catherine have intentionally chosen a quieter life in the countryside to escape the “goldfish bowl” of London, where privacy was always hard to come by. The move to Windsor was partly driven by a desire to give their children a more normal life, away from the public spotlight. In London, the children couldn’t enjoy simple activities like playing football in the park with friends. That being said, it doesn’t mean the couple will never be in London. Their private office will remain in the capital, allowing them to continue their royal duties without needing to reside there full-time. Adelaide Cottage, a grace-and-favor residence leased from the Crown Estate, serves as their private home, keeping a low profile to maintain their much-valued privacy. The cottage underwent a full refurbishment in 2015 and is said to feature a beautiful garden, a cozy study, and a master bedroom decorated with golden dolphins and a ceiling rope recycled from a 19th-century royal yacht. Princess Charlotte’s eighth birthday offered a rare glimpse of their outdoor space, showing her sitting in a wicker chair—a modern addition to their otherwise traditional garden furniture.
Even during their time at Kensington Palace, William and Catherine took great care to ensure their children had privacy. At their former home, Apartment 1A—more of a mansion than an apartment, with 20 rooms across four stories—they cleverly created private outdoor spaces to give their children some semblance of normalcy away from the prying eyes of the public.
Currently, King Charles III and Queen Camilla do not reside at Buckingham Palace. Their primary home is Clarence House, also located in London. They are not expected to move to the Palace until extensive renovations are completed. For William and Catherine, the transition from London to Windsor has been a thoughtful decision. The couple spent years living in Apartment 1A, but the lack of privacy in such a high-profile setting likely contributed to their decision to move.
Windsor also offered an emotional connection for William and Catherine. Windsor Castle was the late Queen’s primary residence in her final months, and being closer to her during this time was invaluable for William. He was able to support both his father and his grandmother regularly, speaking with her on the phone and visiting often.
