King Charles’s Exciting New Addition For George Charlotte Louis at Sandringham đź’–

To the world, King Charles III is the ruler of the United Kingdom and 14 Commonwealth realms, but to his grandchildren, he’s simply “Grandpa.” His Majesty has five beloved grandchildren: Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis, Prince Archie, and Princess Lilibet. Known for his playful and devoted approach to family, Charles is affectionately called “Grandpa Wales” by the young royals, as reported by Camilla, the Queen Consort. Before becoming king, he was often seen crawling on the floor, making funny noises, and laughing with them—moments cherished by the family.

This season, King Charles has a surprise in store for his grandchildren on the royal Sandringham Estate in Norfolk. Inspired by a labyrinth he enjoyed as a child, he’s constructing a new maze, designed especially for George, Charlotte, and Louis. The idea of refurbishing his childhood maze has been a longstanding dream of his, and work on the lower maze garden began in 2023. Just last week, the intricate square maze, crafted from topiary and yew trees, opened to the public on Sandringham’s west lawn.

The design, rooted in Charles’s own childhood memories, reflects his passion for gardening and his appreciation for formal geometry and cosmological symbolism. Jack Lynfield, Sandringham’s head gardener, shared his excitement for the project, noting how visitors can walk from the topiary garden into the charming lower maze. The hedges, already planted around a central fountain, bring a touch of wonder to the estate. This maze marks the third one created by a British monarch in the last 300 years, joining others Charles has designed at Dumfries House in Ayrshire and Balmoral in Aberdeenshire.

George, Charlotte, and Louis are sure to be thrilled at the chance to explore the new maze together, perhaps even competing to be the first to reach the center. William and Catherine, the Prince and Princess of Wales, are known for their hands-on approach to parenting, so it’s easy to imagine them joining in the fun. Family gatherings at Sandringham are filled with cherished moments, laughter, and play—a joyful atmosphere Charles hopes his grandchildren will experience often.

Prince William has spoken about how brilliant his father is with the youngest members of the family, but he wishes Charles had even more time to spend with his grandchildren. “Having more time with him at home would be lovely,” William said. “When he’s there, he’s brilliant, but we need him there as much as possible.”

In addition to his roles with George, Charlotte, Louis, Archie, and Lilibet, Charles also has a place in the lives of his five step-grandchildren. Camilla fondly shared how her grandchildren adore him, especially when he reads Harry Potter with every character’s voice brought to life. Charles himself has spoken about the special bond he has with his grandchildren, saying, “It’s a different part of your life. The great thing is to encourage them, show them things, and take an interest. It’s very important to create a bond when they are very young.”

With family outings, storytelling, and now a delightful maze to explore, it’s clear there’s never a dull moment when the royal kids are with their Grandpa Wales.
