CONGRATULATIONS! Prince William Got A Prestigious Title After Duke’s New Baby Announcement
Prince William May Soon Take on a Prestigious New Role
Prince William could soon receive a prestigious new role, further strengthening his already close bond with his longtime friend, Hugh Grosvenor, the 7th Duke of Westminster.
If there are two things Prince William doesn’t need, it’s more titles and more responsibilities—but it looks like he may be getting both! And this time, it comes with some joyous baby news.
A New Addition to the Extended Royal Circle
No, Princess Catherine isn’t expecting another child, nor does this baby affect the line of succession like the recent birth of Princess Beatrice’s daughter, Athena, in January. Instead, the exciting news comes from the Duke and Duchess of Westminster, who have announced that they are expecting their first child this summer!
With this milestone, many royal watchers are anticipating that Prince William will receive an important phone call very soon—possibly inviting him to take on the role of Godfather to the new baby.
A Deeply Rooted Friendship
For those who may have lost track, Hugh Grosvenor, godfather to Prince George, has had strong ties to the royal family for generations. His own godfather is King Charles, while his mother, Natalia Grosvenor, is one of Prince William’s godparents.
Given their deep familial and personal connections, it seems highly likely that Hugh and his wife, Olivia Henson, will extend a heartfelt invitation to William to become their child’s godfather.
This honor would further intertwine their families’ long-standing traditions of loyalty and friendship, and knowing William’s deep respect and affection for Hugh, he would undoubtedly embrace the role wholeheartedly.
The Next Generation of the Westminster Family
The official announcement from the Duke and Duchess of Westminster read:
“The Duke and Duchess of Westminster are very pleased to share that The Duchess is expecting a baby in the summer. The couple are delighted with the news and are very much looking forward to starting a family together.”
By the time summer arrives, we can expect to hear the pitter-patter of tiny (and very pampered) feet, as well as the official announcement that Prince William has added yet another prestigious title to his growing list.
For those keeping track, his full official appellation is:
“His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, Duke of Cornwall and Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn, and Baron Carrickfergus.”
Wouldn’t it be fitting if the Westminsters named their child after their good friend? Carrick Grosvenor has a nice ring to it!
A Grand Wedding and Royal Ties
Prince William played a significant role in Hugh and Olivia’s wedding, serving as an usher at their grand ceremony on June 7, 2024, at Chester Cathedral.
At the time, it was reported that Prince Harry had also been invited, but he declined, likely due to ongoing tensions with William. Despite this, Hugh remains one of the few people who still maintains close relationships with both brothers.
Interestingly, Hugh is also a godfather to Prince Harry and Meghan’s son, Archie—a testament to his unique position within the royal circle.
A Billionaire Duke and His Heir
Hugh Grosvenor became the 7th Duke of Westminster in 2016, following the passing of his father, Gerald Grosvenor, the 6th Duke. He inherited an estate worth approximately £9 billion at the time and has since seen his fortune rise to an estimated £10.6 billion, making him one of the wealthiest individuals in the world.
However, there’s an interesting legal twist regarding his future heir. Under the current British system of male primogeniture, noble titles and estates can only be passed down through the male line.
This means that if Hugh and Olivia’s first child is a girl, she will not inherit the Duke of Westminster title or the family estate. Instead, she would receive the courtesy title of “Lady”, while a future son would be styled as “Earl Grosvenor” until he eventually inherits the dukedom.
This same rule directly impacted Hugh’s two older sisters, Lady Tamara and Lady Edwina Grosvenor, who were unable to inherit the title after their father’s passing.
A Future Steeped in Tradition
Despite the centuries-old inheritance laws, the birth of Hugh and Olivia’s child is a significant moment for both their family and the extended royal circle. If Prince William does become the baby’s godfather, it will mark yet another strong link between two of Britain’s most powerful and historically significant families.
What do you think? Should noble titles be passed down equally to sons and daughters, or should male primogeniture remain in place? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
