In Robert Hardman’s new book, it’s described how Queen Elizabeth had been preparing for an important meeting from her bedside, but as her health declined, she had to cancel. The Queen passed away at 3:10 p.m. on September 8, 2022, after more than 70 years on the throne. Just two days before her death, she met with outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his replacement, Liz Truss, at Balmoral, and even attended a drinks party that evening.
According to Hardman, a guest at the party recalled that the Queen was “quite buzzy” over pre-dinner drinks but eventually said she would head upstairs to dine alone. The following day, she spent most of her time resting in bed but still arranged with her private council to attend a meeting via video link. As her health continued to decline, her participation was reduced to an audio-only connection, but just before the meeting was set to begin, the Queen made the difficult decision to cancel entirely, following her doctors’ advice.
That evening, on September 7, Prince Charles was advised by Princess Anne and his private secretary to urgently make his way to Balmoral, as it was feared the end was near. With his wife Camilla, Charles boarded a helicopter at 9:30 a.m. on the morning of the 8th to make the 150-mile trip from Ayrshire to Balmoral, where they had been carrying out royal duties. As they flew, Charles read his briefing papers for the last time as Prince and made four important calls to Prince William, Prince Andrew, Prince Edward, and Prince Harry, urging them to come to Scotland.
Charles arrived at nearby Birkhall—his and Camilla’s private retreat—before 10:30 a.m. He borrowed a Land Rover from a staff member and drove to Balmoral, where he spent about an hour at his mother’s bedside. Tragically, he was not there when she passed away, though his sister Princess Anne remained by the Queen’s side. Charles had briefly stepped outside to collect his thoughts and received news of her passing while driving back to Balmoral.
After spending time with his mother, Charles took a walk in the grounds of Birkhall to gather mushrooms, while Camilla also went for a walk. Meanwhile, Princess Anne and the Queen’s personal assistant, Angela Kelly, took turns sitting with the Queen, as Reverend Kenneth MacKenzie read Bible passages to her. Sadly, most of the royal family who were en route to Scotland did not make it in time to say their goodbyes to the Queen.
In a heartfelt moment, King Charles called Prince William through the switchboard but, not wanting to share the news before speaking directly to his son, simply introduced himself by saying, “It’s me.” Recognizing his voice, the operator put him through to William, then to Prince Andrew and Prince Edward. Unfortunately, Prince Harry was unreachable, as he was already in the air en route to Balmoral.
